Outreach Committee Report - July 2005
Attendees: Tim Nuse, Jackie Dupras, Bruce Stotler, Lara-Anne Jordan,
Leesa Tucker, Steve Karbowski, Greg Doss, Sam Scharff
I. Reviewed calendar of upcoming Outreach events and staffing
needs
We have the all-important West Seattle Junction Festival (formerly
the "Street Fair") the weekend of July 15-16-17 (Fri. through Sun.)
Currently, we have some 2 and 4 hours slots throughout the day on
Saturday and Sunday for volunteers to help man the 34th District
Dems booth. We will be providing information to festival-goers on
the mission of our organization, registering voters, recruiting
new members, and talking about issues and the upcoming local election
in November. Contact Sarah Earl or Steve Karbowski for more information.
The following weekend, Sat. and Sun. July 23-24 is White Ctr.
Jubilee Days. We are also in need of some volunteers to help run
the booth. Please contact Steve K. or Tanya if you can help. Also,
be sure to get the word out to friends and family members about
these events.
Every weekend through the summer, Jackie Dupras will be at the
West Seattle Farmers' Market from 10 to 2 p.m. If you can help,
or know someone who may be interested in helping Jackie to spread
the word about the 34th Dems, please let Jackie know.
The West Seattle Music Festival is another Outreach event where
we will be visible and "reaching out" to our fellow Democrats, Independents,
and fair-minded Republicans. Scheduled for the weekend of August
12-14 on Alki Beach. Contact Tim Nuse or Tanya Aguilar for more
information and volunteer opportunities.
II. Community Organization Outreach
Tim Nuse as lead for this project updated us as to his planning
and thoughts for reaching out to other District non-profits. We
discussed the purpose and importance of communicating with other
organizations--mainly social service, environmental and faith organizations
within the District to let them know that we can support them in
their missions to better our communities and neighborhoods.
We decided to contact the following organizations to see they
have volunteer needs that we may be able to communicate to our membership
for help: West Seattle Churches Assoc. (Lara-Anne), W. Seattle Foodbank
(Tim), Volunteer Chore Services (Steve), and White Ctr. Refugee
Ctr. (possibly Dina Johnson). And we'll also keep track of future
in-district Mayor Nickels Neighborhood Cleanups, which draw neighborhood
activists and social organizations.
Jackie said that a "Volunteer Services" column could be placed
in the newsletter to connect our membership with neighborhood organizations
in need of volunteers and support.
III. Canvassing Project and District Transportation Issues
Forum
Unfortunately Karen Farnsworth, our newly appointed Canvassing Subcommittee
Chair could not attend the meeting due to scheduling conflict. We
had a rousing discussion on issues and the spectrum of viewpoints
to be represented at the Forum. However, we agreed to move forward
with the conceptual design of the Transportation Forum brochure
and have a working draft for the next e-board meeting (July 20th).
We agreed that at the E-Board meeting we should: 1) settle on a
date for the Forum, likely sometime before the election (probably
mid-late October); 2) discuss getting commitments to participate
from electeds, speakers and organizations; 3) begin to set out an
agenda for the forum, and 4) discuss the brochure text and visuals.
The actual canvass will require detailed discussion as well, as
we need to get PCOs committed to walking their precincts, updating
the Voterfile, surveying voters for issues interests, recruiting
new members, and advertising the issues forum.
IV. Sam Scharff's project
Sam Scharff's project to reach out to shut-ins and seniors with
low or no mobility - Sam has some good ideas on this and would like
to speak with the E-Board for a few minutes at the next meeting
on July 20th. He will make a short presentation and we can discuss
his proposal.
V. Latino Voter Outreach Project
Tanya Aguilar has agreed to head up the Latino Voter Outreach Project
for our District! YEAH, TANYA!! More to come on that . . .
