Outreach Committee Report - January 2005
What is outreach? Increasing the diversity of membership, the
voting percentage of minorities in the district, cross-pollinating
with the rest of the community, including other organizations. First,
we want to call everyone on our phone list who are not members,
e.g. people who went to caucuses last year (we have about 200 members
so far this year but 4000 people attended the caucuses).
At our January 15th meeting, we decided on several objectives and
generated a number of ideas:
Mission statement: The mission of the 34th District Democrats
Outreach program is to increase membership with an emphasis on diversity
and participation.
Goal: focus on precincts as a measure of our success, e.g.
membership in certain targeted precincts over the next two years.
Another potential goal: by the end of 2006, have a goal of
1% of the population of our district as members of the 34th District
Democrats. This would be about 1000 members (we had about 600 members
at the end of 2004). The 43rd District claims 1400 members.
Idea: get PCO's to engage people and get them to promote
membership in their precincts as they walk the precincts. (Sarah
Earl and Karen Farnsworth agreed to take the lead on this)
Goal: have a presence at community events throughout the
year, especially in the White Center / Highline area. (Tanya Aguilar
agreed to take the lead on this.)
Goal: network with community organizations (Tim Nuse, lead,
with assistance from Rebecca Wells and Walt Creekmore)
Idea: Advertise our meetings in papers, either purchased
space or in columns (Walt Creekmore, lead, until the organization
identifies a communications director)
Idea: Target different parts of the District for forums -
meetings or house parties to talk about issues or invite elected
officials. This might also be an Alki "beach party" or something
similar. At the end of the night, ask people to join the District
Democrats and come to the District meeting. Note: the Kerry campaign
had a house party kit, as did the Dean and Kucinich campaigns. (Steve
Karbowski, lead). * Idea: Outreach committee liaison with other
committees to make sure we don't overlap the work being done by
other committees such as the legislative action committee. (Tim
Nuse, lead)
Volunteer coordinator. (no one identified to take the lead)
Survey. Jackie Dupras will do this as part of the newsletter.
Next meeting: Tuesday February 1st, 7:00 PM, Beveridge Place Pub,
Morgan Junction (formerly Full Moon saloon).
