Dow Constantine's thoughtful
article about Annexation, published this week in the West Seattle Herald.

a lot more information on this vital topic.

September Meeting: Annexation!
The next meeting of the 34th District Democrats is Wednesday September 13th and the
major topic is the potential annexation of North Highline by either the City of Burien or the
City of Seattle or both. See details in Chair Ivan Weiss' letter for September and posted on the Agenda page, including links to official information about the issue. The purpose of the meeting is
information - so our members understand the many facets of this complicated issue. Other business includes a potential resolution asking for a public vote on the Alaskan Way Tunnel. You can also download the September newsletter from this website. Updated September 15, 2006
Vote!
Coming to a polling place near you on Tuesday, September 19th. This is not your ordinary primary election - we will be electing at least two and maybe three Supreme Court justices. The Building Industry Association of Washington and conservative groups are attempting to "buy" the Supreme Court. We urge you to vote to re-elect Justices Gerry Alexander, Tom Chambers, and Susan Owens. (See article below.) See all our recommendations on the endorsement page, or download a sample ballot. But be sure to VOTE! Don't know where or how to vote? See the King County Elections website.

Supreme Court Takeover?
The 34th District Democrats urge you to vote for Susan Owens (position 2), Gerry Alexander (pos. 8) and Tom Chambers (pos. 9) for State Supreme Court. These offices are on the ballot in the September 17th primary. Here’s why:
The Building Industrial Association of Washington, a rightwing group of builders opposed to just about any kind of regulation, is pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into making sure that incumbents Susan Owens and Gerry Alexander are not returned to the Supreme Court. The incumbents are being outspent by approximately three to one.
This group is attempting to fashion the Supreme Court to their own liking. This same group poured money into Jim Johnson’s campaign and he is now sitting on the Supreme Court.
Tom Chambers is opposed by a candidate who has been rated “not qualified” five times - Jeanette Burrage was not qualified to be a Superior Court Judge and was voted out of office; now she’s back and she’s still not qualified. Since it’s hard to get information on judges, sometimes people vote for a familiar sounding name. And her name is quite familiar to a lot of people who might not realize that they remember her name because she is the King County Superior Court judge who would not allow woman attorneys to wear pants in her courtroom.

Darcy Burner "Volunteer Day"
COME JOIN Congressman McDermott's campaign staff for a day
of volunteering (10:30-1:00pm) and meet the next Democratic Congresswomen from
Washington State. There are a variety of volunteer tasks at both offices (Bellevue
and Auburn) from office work to canvassing to phone calling and we are flexible to
people's schedules and preferences. Carpooling will also be provided for those who
wish to take advantage.
September 9th is a nationwide 'Volunteer Day' competition for
all the Democrat's targeted races. If we can get 50 to 100 people to the event,
it is likely she will win the competition and win the funds she desperately needs to
compete with Reichert's commercial onslaughts. Imagine an all blue western Washington
for the first time ever.
CONTACT Kirk Shirley via email (kirk@mcdermottforcongress.com) if you are
interested.
When: September 9th at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Bellevue office: 12443 Bel Red Rd, Suite 310, Bellevue, WA 98005 or Auburn Office: 240 auburn way s, suite 1A. Auburn, WA 98002

Why: Get Darcy the $ she needs to compete with Reichert's commercial
onslaughts.

Post 9/11 America: What Have We Learned?
A Talk by Rob Crawford, Associate Professor, Interdisciplinary Arts
and Sciences, University of Washington, Tacoma
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2006, 7:00 P.M. VASHON LIBRARY, 17210
Vashon Hwy SW 463-3153
Five years after the event, it is now possible to discern the
contours of post-9/11 changes in the United States. We are witnesses to a radical
reshaping of the political landscape. This talk will focus on how the "war
on terrorism" has become the occasion for a concentration of power in the
executive branch of the federal government and the near neutralization
of political opposition around issues claimed to be matters of national security.
What are the conditions of possibility for a meaningful opolitics
that can challenge these disturbing developments in our political life?
