Updated November 9, 2006 Election 2006 Shifts Political Power in both Washingtons
The tremendous Democratic Party victories on November 7th caused multiple earthquakes in
Washington DC, putting control of both the United States House and Senate in Democratic
hands. But the effects of this sweep are also felt here in Washington State. The State
Senate, which had 26 Democrats and 25 Republicans, is likely to have a Democratic majority
of 31 to 18, a gain of six seats. And in the State House of Representatives, the Democratic
majority has apparently increased from 55 (with 43 Republicans) to perhaps 63 to 35, a
swing of 8 seats.
Many races remain quite close, for example, in the 8th Congressional District
Democrat Darcy Burner trails by about 2,700 votes. But by any measure, the face of both
Washingtons has changed, and for the better!
