Updated June 15, 2008 June 11 Meeting: No Jail in Highland Park!
A major topic at our June 11th meeting was the City jail which may be built in Highland Park. 34th District members who are also active in the Highland Park Action Committee discussed this in detail and voiced opposition. Elected officials including
King County Councilmember Dow Constantine and State Rep. Sharon Nelson spoke in support of their
position. See the Action Committee webpage and West Seattle Blog for more details. In other business we endorsed several candidates for King County Superior Court judge: Regina Cahen (pos. 10), Barbara Mack and Nic Corning (dual endorsement for pos. 37), Mariane Spearman (pos. 53) and Rebeccah Graham (pos. 22). (All our endorsements are here.) And we passed PCO Lisa Plymate's resolution to re-empower the Food-and-Drug Administration. We voted to give a $1134 contribution to Washington Public Campaigns. Ivan Weiss also announced that we have 153 candidates for precinct committee officer in 149 of our 204 precincts (see complete list in news item below). Full minutes will be posted shortly.
Updated June 8, 2008 Candidate Filing is Complete
On the national scene, Barack Obama became the Democratic nominee for President. On the local scene, the candidate filing deadline was June 6th,
so we now know who has filed for the statewide and local offices up for election this year. The list of all
offices up for election, and Democratic candidates, is here (PDF file). In the 34th District, we also have at least 153 people who have filed for PCO
positions, with contested races in at least three precincts (Seattle 1408, 1467 and 1478). That list of candidates for PCO is
here.
We, as the 34th District Democrats, have not endorsed yet for several offices - we'll consider such endorsements in our July meeting.
Updated June 2, 2008 June 11 Meeting: Schools, Jails, Judges
At our June 11th Meeting at the Hall at Fauntleroy we'll hear from our "new" School Board Director, Steve Sundquist. Candidates for Superior Court will be here as well. Then we'll have a discussion about the City's plans for a new Jail, with possible siting in our District. The full agenda is here.

Chair Ivan Weiss' Message for June We don't always Pick and Choose
When the City of Seattle on May 6 offered four potential sites for a potential new city jail that would house misdemeanor offenders, residents of Highland Park in the 34th District, whose neighborhood contained one of the sites and was close to another, sprang into action.
With the help of 34th District Democrats activists Dina Johnson, Precinct Committee officer in SEA 34-1250, and her husband Blair, immediate past chair of the Highland Park Community Association, residents formed the Highland Park Action Committee.
Residents met with City of Seattle officials May 19 at Highland Park Improvement Club to discuss the proposal. West Seattle Blog chronicled the meeting, which sparked a lengthy exchange of comments.

Saturday, June 21, 2008 Vashon Island Democrats
Program: We have a candidate! Although some of us were wondering if Island Democrats would have a presidential candidate to promote by Strawberry Festival, I am happy to say that we are now able to rally around and promote the candidacy of Barack Obama. Towards that end, we have two related items for this month's Democratic Club program. Here on Vashon, most people are registered to vote, but in many other areas this is not the case. Artemis OakGrove, the Neighborhood Challenge Coordinator for the 34th District, and Kimber McCreery, 34th District Field Organizer, will join us to discuss how we can help with voter registration and other outreach in an area close to us: Burien. Let's help our neighbors achieve the high levels of political awareness and participation that we enjoy here on Vashon! We will also hear reports from Islanders who attended the Democratic State Convention. We have invited our teenage delegates from Vashon to come and share their experiences with us. Come and be inspired by these young activists!
Our meeting is on Saturday, June 21, in the Land Trust building: potluck social at 6:00, meeting 6:30-8:30. Please help us accomplish our goal of a no-trash potluck by bringing your own, non-disposable dinnerware!
If you or your group would like to make a presentation at one of our meetings, or for general information, please contact Roger Fulton at 669-9459.
