Updated February 5, 2007 January Message from Ivan Weiss
Chair, 34th District Democrats
If you think this year was a wild one . . .
. . . in 2007, the 34 th Legislative District will be Ground Zero for local politics, which will have countywide and statewide ramifications. And you won't want to miss any of it.
Governor Gregoire has put the future of the Alaskan Way Viaduct portion of State Highway 99 in the hands of Seattle voters. That election might take place by April. If it does, certainly we would want to take a position on the vital link between downtown Seattle and West Seattle, White Center, Burien and Vashon Island.
Only Seattle voters will cast ballots in April, or whenever, but all dues-paying resident members of the 34th District Democrats can vote on the organization's position. If that vote comes in February, your dues would have to be paid by the January meeting for you to be eligible.
Updated January 19, 2007 34 Dems Endorse Seattle Schools First!
The 34th District Democrats endorse the two Seattle school levies on the February 6th Ballot.
These levies are Proposition 1 Capital Bond and Proposition 2 Operations Levy. For more
details see the Schools First Website or King County Elections. If you want to do more,
put up a yard sign, available from Claire Foster 932-6636 or e-mail her. But vote for these levies, which need 60% to pass and a minimum turnout of 91,000 voters.

Calendar Events in January, 2007
Sunday, January 21, 2007 King County Legislative Action Committee
Our next LAC meeting will be held at the Burien Library on Sunday, January 21st from 2:00-4:00pm in the 34th LD—home of Ivan Weiss (chair of the 34th and LAC member) and Toni Lysen (our founding chair). Just for the record—we’ll be having our spring meetings in the 45th, 46th and 30th LD’s!
Our guest speaker will be the distinguished Phil Talmadge, former State Supreme Court Justice and State Senator in the 34th. Phil will be addressing issues related to the viaduct---emphasizing the rebuilding option. We may bring in an additional speaker to raise an alternative perspective-- someone with "tunnel vision".
The LAC is convening a team of bloggers to track and post articles on our issues/bills during session. Click here for our current list of bills and assigned trackers/writers. We could use more help---please let me know if you are interested!
