Updated February 5, 2007 February Message from Ivan Weiss
Chair, 34th District Democrats
Tunnel or Viaduct? Speak up now
The election will be March 13. The ballot language is in the newsletter.
We'll have the Voters' Pamphlet statements for and against both ballot measures at our
February 14 meeting. But will we have YOU? Will you be our Valentine?
If all the people (250-plus) who have paid dues by January 15 (30 days before our
February meeting) show up, we'll rock the house, and we'll send the city a message,
one way or another. Our District organization is on the map, at the local, county,
and state level. Voters in our District and elsewhere, and the media, are watching what
we do. Let's turn out and show them!
We'll have plenty of other issues on our agenda (see meeting agenda page). There will be an endorsement vote
on the legislative agenda of the Washington Environmental Council,
and one on the city's efforts to reduce gun violence. Our members are involved on
both fronts. (continued)
Updated February 26, 2007 34th District Doesn't Endorse a Viaduct Alternative
At our February 14th meeting, both the tunnel or viaduct options failed to get an
endorsement for the upcoming, March 13th, vote to replace the aging, dangerous Alaskan
Way viaduct. Proposition 1 (tunnel hybrid alternative) was tabled by a vote of 54 to 24.
A motion to endorse proposition 2 (elevated viaduct alternative) failed 37 to 46. Later in the
meeting, a motion to vote NO on proposition two received a majority of votes - 43 to 25 - but failed
because a two-thirds majority is required for endorsement. In other business, we unanimously
supported common sense firearms regulations and Washington Environmental Priorities, legislation
pending before the State Legislature. We heard a political analysis from George Cheong, political
consultant and PCO 34-1473. And we appointed 15 new PCO's. See a full report on the February
minutes page.
