Chair Ivan Weiss' Message for August
The 34th District Democrats and the Top Two Primary

Ivan Weiss, Chair, 34th District DemocratsAll our endorsed Democratic candidates are unopposed by other Democrats in the primary, so we don't have to do anything until November, right?
Wrong. This is not your normal primary. This is "Top Two," foisted on us by Republican Secretary of State Sam Reed, the Washington State Grange, and a whole lot of misguided voters who thought they were getting their old unconstitutional blanket primary back.
The top two vote-getters for each office, regardless of party, will advance to the November election, including all the candidates for statewide races. For several reasons, these are the races that deserve our utmost efforts for the primary.
Barack Obama is going to win in Washington state, by a wide margin. That's not even in doubt, but ....

Four 34th Democrats going to the Democratic National Convention
Two more 34th District Democrats were elected as delegates at the Washington State Democrats' Convention on June 15th. Kimber McCreery will go as an at large delegate for Clinton and Mayor Greg Nickels will be a leadership delegate for Obama. They join Nick Bordner and Chris Porter, who were elected DNC delegates at the Congressional District caucus (see article further down on this page). The 34th District Democrats were out in force at the convention as shown in the photo (click on it to enlarge it).

Obama Delegate Rodgers featured in Wall Street Journal Article
Well, gee, even the bastion-of-Republican-conservatism the Journal can get something right once in a while. Our own Jody Rodgers of the 34th District, already an Obama delegate to the State Convention, was featured in a WSJ article about delegates seeking to attend the Democratic National Convention on May 24th. View it here online or download as a PDF (copyright Dow Jones Company). P.S. Jody is still looking for that DNC spot at the state convention!
