April 9th District Meeting was Marijuana and more ...
Our regular April meeting started on a sad note - announcing the passing of our former Sergeant-at-Arms Barb Parker (obituary here). Medical and Recreational Marijuana. What are the rules? How will it work? State Representative Eileen Cody, Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes,
King County Council member Joe McDermott, and Liquor Control Board Chair Sharon Foster hashed out (pun intended) rules, regulations, concerns and issues and
answer questions. See the draft meeting minutes here for more information about this dicussion.
We endorsed our State Senator Sharon Nelson and Representatives Eileen Cody and Joe Fitzgibbon for re-election this year. We also heard from Seattle City Council Member Sally Bagshaw about the "Parks for All" campaign to create a Metropolitan Parks District. It is not yet on the ballot but the City Council might place it on an election ballot soon.

Chair Marcee Stone-Vekich's Message for April
Recently, the E-Board discussed upcoming programs for our monthly meetings, and they enthusiastically chose the implementation of legalized marijuana to be the focus of our April program. According to WeedMaps.com, of the 200 medical marijuana dispensaries and delivery services located in Seattle, the 34th Legislative District is home to less than ten. Posted to that website are links to doctors, marijuana publications, free Apps, videos, and many social media tools. In preparation for our meeting, I encourage you to take a magical mystery tour of that website because today marijuana is not about nickel bags, homemade hash pipes and listening to Pink Floyd in our dorm rooms...

Cambodian New Year is April 26th!
The season of local festivals and street fairs kicks off April 26th with the White Center Cambodian New Year Festival. 2014 marks the 4th year that we will be participating in this colorful event. The food is great and there is plenty of fun entertainment. Please join us at our booth where we will talk with our neighbors and register voters in one of the least represented areas of our district. Endorsements Meeting in May
Our endorsements meeting will be on May 14th. To be considered for endorsement candidates will need to file a candidate's questionnaire with the King County Democrats. This includes judicial candidates - there is a separate questionnaire for them. Here is a link to the questionairres which have been submitted.

Filing for Election as PCO
Anyone wishing to be a Precinct Committee Officer in King County will need to file for election between April 28 and May 16. Online filing is May 12-16. Contested races only will be on the primary election ballot in August. More information is online at the King County website here.

March 12th District Meeting was about Minimum Wage in Seattle
At our March 12th District meeting we heard from Sally Clark, chair of the Slect Committee on Minimum Wage about the $15 minimum wage movement in Seattle. We also heard from those running for judge positions including Kimi Kondo of the Seattle Municipal Court, Anne Harper for King County District Court, and Roger Rogoff for King County Superior Court. Monisha Harrell of Equal Rights Washington discussed a partnership working on anti-school-bullying. And we endorsed King County Proposition One, on the ballot April 22nd, to improve funding for roads and transit. We passed resolutions supporting Boeing Machinsts and regarding online voter registration. More details are in the draft meeting minutes here.

34th Legislative District Democratic Caucus was held March 9th
Our 2014 legislative district caucus was held on Sunday March 9th at the Evergreen High School Campus Cafeteria. We elected the following delegates to the state convention (listed alphabetically): Nick Barker
Ted Barker, Doreen Bomar, Russ Brubaker, Marci Carpenter, Karen Chilcutt, Kari Feeney, Carol Frillman, James Haun, Mike Parker, Nicholas Ramirez, Tamsen Spengler, Kathyrn Sprigg.
Alternates (listed in the order they would replace delegates if a delegate cannot attend)

Washington State Democratic Central Committee elects JAXON RAVENS new state party chair, Feb. 1, 2014
Following a spirited, mostly positive 2 month long, 4-way race, we elected Jaxon Ravens as the new head of our party, to succeed Dwight Pelz. Jaxon has served as executive director of the Washington state Democrats for the past 10 years and has chaired the National Association of Democratic Executive Directors. He won handily over his chief competitor, Dana Laurent, on the second ballot, despite Dana's endorsement by Governor Jay Inslee a few days before the election.

February 12th District Meeting featured Seattle City Council Members, Transportation
At our February 12th District Meeting we heard from Seattle City Council members Tom Rasmussen and Mike O'Brien, who discussed transportation, the $15 minimum wage, disabled parking placards, Uber, a head tax and a metropolitan parks levy among other issues. King County Executive Dow Constantine introduced the topic of a potential ballot measure in April to support transit. We approved a budget for 2014, heard about the election of the new State Party Chair Jaxon Ravens, and approved Nicholas Ramirez as PCO of Biloxi Precinct on Vashon Island. Lobby Day Monday was January 20
Legislative Action Committee Chair Tamsen Spengler arranged a full day of activities including meetings with Senator
Sharon Nelson and Representatives Eileen Cody and Joe Fitzgibbon. Thirteen (13) 34th District Democrats attended, making up most of the King County contingent of 19 Democrats. The day was a success thanks to Tamsen's thorough research of potential issues as well as the active participation from our three state legislators. Time to Renew Your Membership
Our membership year starts on January 1, and all members need to renew in order to remain eligible to vote on endorsements and other matters coming before the Organization.
The easiest way to renew is going to our new online webpage here (it says "contribution form" but it is really membership renewal). If you need to print a paper form and send it by snailmail, go here. Happy New Year 2014!

January 8 District Meeting was about the Affordable Care Act
We heard from a panel about the ACA in Washington State (see photo above and click on it for a larger version). The panel includes Emily Brice, Senior Health Policy Advisor at the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, Janet Varon, attorney, Representative Eileen Cody and Lisa Plymate, M.D. Eileen also gave us a run-down of some of the issues facing the State Legislature now that it has convened for its mid-biennium short-session (see photo at right and click for larger version). We also gave out some awards - see more information on our recognition page. And we received a surprise visit from Judges Johanna Bender, Steve Rosen, Karen Donahue and Ed McKenna.
