A Brazilian Garden Party-A Big Success
The 34th District Dems annual garden party and auction was held at West Seattle Nursery (thank you, Mark Smith! And by the way their big fall sale starts today). The dinner drew an enthusiastic crowd despite cool
temperatures. We enjoyed wonderful music from Grupo Amoroso, food from Herban Feast and humorous, entertaining auctioneering from our PCO, member and sports personality New York Vinnie.
The event was organized by our State Committeeman Chris Porter. Coverage from the West Seattle Blog is here. Later we will report the dollar results, but for now, enjoy the two video clips and photos embedded below - click any thumbnail to play the video or enlarge the photo.

This year's Garden Party had a Brazilian theme, complete with a local band that played
Brazilian music, appetizers with a Brazilian flair from Herban Feast, and colorful decorations
including flowers for your hair. It was a great success, thanks to Chris Porter, who accepted
the job of Fundraising Chair even though he was warned about how much work it would be.
The biggest hit of the live
auction was a cocktail party
with Senator Joe McDermott
at Representative Eileen
Cody's new house. This was
not actually auctioned, but
sold for $50 to anyone who
wanted to attend. And a lot
of people did, enough to
raise around $1,500.
A special thank you goes
out to our three legislators,
Senator Joe McDermott,
Representatives Eileen
Cody and Sharon Nelson for
donating $900 to help offset
the cost of the food.
We also
want to thank Herban Feast,
not only for the wonderful
skewers and the best
gazpacho around, but for offering it to us at a discounted price. If you liked the food, be sure
to check out their new restaurant, Fresh Bistro.
Grupo Amoroso played classic bossa nova, samba, and Brazilian pop and jazz, and even had
some of us dancing, including some of us who aren't as young as we used to be.
New York
Vinnie was a great auctioneer and kept us happily bidding away, while we were entertained
with his stories and wit.
This is the 14th year that PCO Mark Smith has offered his business space, the West Seattle
Nursery, for the Garden Party. Without it, there would simply be no Garden Party. A special
thank you for closing the parking lot early, even though it probably meant lost business. The
extra time made for a much smoother set-up and fewer frayed nerves.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who made our Garden Party a success. It's always a lot
more work than anyone ever expects, but everyone came through and it was a wonderful,
well-organized party as well as a financial success.

34th District Democrats' Annual Garden Party Auction - 2009
The Garden Party and Auction will be held on Friday, August 14 at the West Seattle Nursery, 5275 California Avenue SW, thanks (again) to Nursery owner and great Democrat Mark Smith. The event begins at 6:00 PM. Anyone supporting the Democratic Party is welcome to attend. This year's theme will be Brazilian with Brazilian appetizers and snacks prepared by Herban Feast. Join us as we begin our silent auction dancing to the music by Grupo Amoroso - sample music can be heard on their website. Our very own PCO and prominent radio sports personality New York Vinny will emcee the live auction as we offer an opportunity to bid for lunch or dinner with prominent leaders - to include Mayor Greg Nickels, King County Executive candidates Dow Constantine and Larry Phillips, as well as items from books to travel to food. Don't miss out on the biggest event of the year and a time to connect with Democrats from the 34th Legislative District.
Chris Porter is chairing this year's Garden Party. Contact Chris via e-mail or phone 206.856.0182.
