October 12th Meeting
Official Minutes
Call to Order: 7:00 PM by Chairman Ivan Weiss.

In his chairman's report, Weiss reported on the successful White
Center Community Development Association dinner the previous Saturday
(see photos above) and notified members of the White Center Food
Bank's upcoming fundraising dinner, October 29 at South Seattle
Community College.
Doug McDonald, State Secretary of Transportation, spoke on transportation
planning for the near future. He described the potential impact
of the passage of Initiative 912 in November on roads, bridges and
ferries. McDonald then answered several questions from the membership.
Jonathan Dong of the Seattle Monorail Project described the Green
Line and the two Monorail-related propositions that will be on the
Settle ballot in the November election. Proposition 1 would provide
the money for construction of a scaled-down Green Line and Proposition
2 would increase the proportion of elected members on the Monorail
Commission.
Mayor Greg Nickels addressed the membership and thanked them for
their support of his re-election campaign. Nickels told the membership
he had voted for the Monorail four times, but was opposing it this
time around and was telling everyone he knew to oppose it.
In new business, we entertained endorsement motions for races in
which we either had not endorsed or in which candidates had failed
to receive endorsement for the primary and were seeking it for the
general election.
It was moved and seconded that we give a sole endorsement
to Jan Drago for Seattle City Council Position 4. The motion passed
60-6.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Richard McIver
for Seattle City Council Position 8. The motion failed 21-37.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Lawrence Molloy
for Seattle Port Commission Position 1. The motion passed 58-2.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Seattle Monorail
Proposition 1. The motion passed 42-17.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse the King County
Veterans and Families Levy. The motion passed 58-3.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Gayle Sommers for
Vashon Fire and Rescue District Commission Position 4. The motion
passed 55-1.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Stephen Lamphear
for Burien City Council Position 5. The motion passed 39-10.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse Seattle Monorail
Proposition 2. The motion passed 53-0.
It was moved and seconded that we endorse the Seattle City
Council Healthcare Advisory Ballot. The motion passed 57-2.
In other new business, the membership approved, by acclamation,
that the December Holiday Party be combined with the regular business
meeting.
