Ivan Weiss, Chair, 34th District DemocratsNovember Message from Chair Ivan Weiss

Poised For Action

No one can say that the 34th District Democrats aren't poised for action for the 2008 election.

Membership is at an all-time high, Precinct Committee Officer recruitment is at an all-time high, and we hope to add more PCOs this month and thereafter.

We have our caucus locations for February 9 lined up, and preparation is under way, not only to select our delegates, but also to maximize caucus attendance for volunteer recruitment for the 2008 election.

Joe McDermott is now our state Senator and we have a terrific new State Representative, Sharon Nelson, and we are looking forward to moving our policy agendas forward in the upcoming Legislative session in Olympia.

Our treasury is flush with money to pay for putting on the precinct and District caucuses. The influx of 2008 dues and the donations we collect at the precinct caucuses will bring us even more. You can pay your 2008 dues anytime, starting now, or at the November meeting.

The 34th District "maxed out" to Darcy Burner in the 8th CD in 2006 and we hope to do that again. We also hope to have strong candidates to replace Republican House members Doc Hastings in the 4th and Cathy McMorris in the 5th. We'd hope to make a strong contribution to Governor Gregoire's re-election campaign and to the campaign of Peter Goldmark for State Land Commissioner.

But that's for later. For now, we'll meet November 14 to debrief the 2007 election and our GOTV efforts, approve our revised bylaws, update your caucus information, and, we hope, appoint a few more PCOs.

The Hall will look a bit different. We don't need the same old same-old every month, so we're trying a new seating arrangement for November - round tables instead of chairs in rows. We hope it will give people more of a chance to talk to each other and, just maybe, to make some new friends and political allies. The 36th District Democrats do this, and it adds a different touch. Let us know if you like it, and if it meets with your favor, we can do it more often, or make the change permanent.

Our members demonstrated to our communities that we are there for them in a big way, with terrific attendance at the annual White Center Food Bank and Delridge Neighborhood Development Association fundraising dinners, both at South Seattle Community College.

The Food Bank dinner was a huge financial success, netting more than $50,000. This is important because the White Center Food Bank feeds more people than the other food banks in our district, and it gets no municipal aid.

The DNDA dinner packed the house even more, and 34th District Democrats were all over the room. Our new PCO in SEA 34-1460, Kathy Humphrey, was honored as the DNDA Volunteer of the Year.

But the 34th did itself proudest at the annual King County Democrats' Awards Banquet, October 28 at the Machinists' Hall ín South Park. The Mexican food, prepared and served by Juan, Judy, and Tanya Aguilar, Ernestine Pearl-Rosendale, David Rosendale, Beth, Darryl, and Carolyn Grieser, Lynne Ingalls, and Helen Daniel, was terrific. County Councilman Dow Constantine was a great Master of Ceremonies, and 34th District Democrats filled more than two whole tables. If I forgot to mention anyone, my apologies. It was quite a day. Did anyone catch the name of that clown who was the live auctioneer?

Featured speakers were Governor Christine Gregoire, U.S. Representative Jim McDermott, State Senator Margarita Prentice, and House Speaker Frank Chopp,

No mention of the county organization would be complete without a big shout-out to King County Democratic Chair Susan Sheary, the hardest-working Democrat in show business, whose leadership by example makes King County the engine that drives the Democratic train in Washington.

See you Wednesday, November 14, for all the democracy you can handle.
