Resolution Supporting I-97 and Opposing War Profiteering
The following resolution, submitted by PCO John Repp, will be presented to the membership for approval at our July meeting:
Whereas: The 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq, preemptively carried out under false pretenses, and without UN authorization, violates international law, placing those who plan, participate in, and profit from it outside the law; and
Whereas: The Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian lands are illegal under international law, placing those who plan, participate in, and profit from any settlement activity outside of international law; and
Whereas: The World Court in The Hague has ruled that the separation barrier built by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal under international law, and should be dismantled, unequivocally placing those who plan, participate in, and profit from its erection outside of international law; and
Whereas: A pre-emptive military attack on Iran, as threatened by the United States of America and Israel, would also be a violation of international law; and
Whereas: The city of Seattle has in the past boycotted corporations engaged in activities violating international law, such as resolution 27220 mandating divestment from institutions doing business with apartheid-era South Africa; and
Whereas: The 34th District Democratic platform calls for a foreign policy that supports the values of the American people including "a steadfast desire for peace and justice" and support for "organizations that promote international law"; and
Whereas: Seattle ballot initiative 97, also known as the Seattle Divest from War and Occupation initiative is a grassroots effort to use the city of Seattle's financial resources as a way to leverage corporations engaged in war profiteering, specifically Halliburton Holding Company and Caterpillar, Inc., to refrain from illegal activity in the Middle East; and
Whereas: Initiative 97 is consistent with the principles of the 34th District Democratic Party platform and we support its aims; and
Whereas: Seattle ballot initiative 97 backers need to gather 18,000 signatures by September 27, 2008;
Therefore the 34th District Democratic Party encourages our members to help collect signatures to help get Seattle Initiative 97 on the ballot; and
Therefore the 34th District Democratic Party will make available signature forms to each PCO for purposes of gathering signatures during the primary campaign walking season, asking voters in their precincts to sign the forms.

Ivan Weiss, Chair, 34th District Democrats July Message from Chair Ivan Weiss

We Organize

Our lineup of organizers for the 2008 campaign is falling into place, and it's a good one.

Most of you already know Artemis OakGrove, our acting PCO in SEA 34-1476, our 34th District coordinator for the Barack Obama campaign, and our Neighborhood Challenge District Organizer.

At our June meeting, we were proud to introduce Kimber McCreery, our PCO in SEA 34-1470, District Coordinator for Hillary Clinton, and now also a delegate to the national convention, as our Coordinated Campaign Field Organizer.

Coordinated Campaign Field Organizers almost never work in their home Districts, so this is a very big deal. Kimber's continued presence in the 34th, the contacts she makes, and the relationships she helps to build, will pay dividends for the 34th years from now.

There's more. David Ginsberg, our soon-to-be PCO in SEA 34-1485, our fastest-growing precinct (in High Point), is one of 6,000 people nationwide out of more than 30,000 applicants to earn an Obama Organizing Fellowship. David has undergone the organizing training for this group, and at his insistence, will be working in the 34th District, adding to the mobilization he already has begun in High Point.

He will be joined by Obama Fellowship winner Chris Manning, from San Diego, who is very excited to be in the 34th. Chris loves the area and the people she has met in the 34th. Maybe we can get her to stay.

The Marching Season is on us

Get on your walking shoes and get ready to show some Democratic Party strength in the four big annual parades in the 34th District.

The Burien 4th of July Parade leads it off. We'll be joining with Democrats from the 33rd and 11th Districts once again, with T-shirts and signs for all Democratic candidates. That will be followed on July 11th by the Vashon Strawberry Festival Parade, always a fun event. The Vashon Dems will have a booth at Strawberry Festival, and all Democrats are welcome.

Saturday, July 19 is a "two-fer." We'll have the West Seattle Hi-Yu Parade at 11 AM and the White Center Jubilee Days Parade at 2 PM. The 34th will have a booth at Jubilee Days, and all are encouraged to participate. Call Les Treall at 762-0226 for details.

Endorsements

Our two U.S. Representatives whose Districts include the 34th LD, Jim McDermott and Adam Smith, have been nominated by the Democratic Party, as have our three state Legislators, Senator Joe McDermott and Representatives Eileen Cody and Sharon Nelson. But the 34th District has not formally endorsed any of these candidates yet, and certainly we should expedite this at the July meeting.

We also have not yet considered endorsement of the candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction (nonpartisan). Incumbent Terry Bergeson is being challenged by former State Representative Randy Dorn, and by Enid Duncan. We know from her campaign that Bergeson cannot attend our July meeting. We have not heard from the other two candidates.

Just to be clear, it is not this chairman's policy to contact candidates and invite them to speak. It is the responsibility of candidates and their campaigns to contact us if they want our votes and our endorsement. They pay campaign managers and recruit scores of volunteers whose job it is to promote their candidates. We do not do the campaigns' jobs for them.

Most candidates get this. Therefore I expect that one candidate for SPI or another will contact us before the July meeting, and we will make space on the agenda for whoever wants to attend.

We will welcome additional candidates for King County Superior Court, and probably will hear from representatives for Initiative 1000, the "Death With Dignity" Initiative.

In addition, we will hear a report from the 34th District Democrats' Leadership Development Committee, and will get updates on our 34th District Democrats Picnic, July 24 at Lincoln Park, and our 15th Annual 34th District Democrats Garden Party and Auction, August 8 at West Seattle Nursery.

See you Wednesday, July 9, for all the Democracy you can handle.
