Joe McDermott Biography

Joe McDermott was first elected to represent the 34th Legislative District in the Washington State House of Representatives in November of 2000 and has been re-elected three times.

Representative McDermott serves on the House Appropriations, Education, and State Government & Tribal Affairs Committees as well as the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, and was previously a member of the House Judiciary and Agriculture & Natural Resources Committees. His legislative priorities include education, elections and public disclosure, the environment, and civil rights issues. McDermott currently serves as the Majority Education Policy Leader. He has introduced and passed legislation to assure alternative assessments other than the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) are available to high school students and to reconstitute the composition and responsibilities of the State Board of Education. Joe sponsored and advocated for legislation adding sexual orientation to the state's anti-discrimination statute, creating a domestic partnership registry, and implementing anti-bullying policies. He also introduced the first comprehensive ban on smoking in indoor public place in Washington State.

Representative McDermott's employment history includes serving as a Senior Budget Analyst with the Seattle School District for four years. Prior to that, he worked for Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney John Ladenburg for six years. McDermott has also taught at South Seattle Community College and spent recent summers as a Tour Guide for Bill Speidel's Underground Tour.

Joe earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs and holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Gonzaga University. McDermott is a third-generation resident of West Seattle where he lives with his partner, Michael, and serves on the Board of the West Seattle Helpline. His civic activities and memberships include the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Vashon Allied Arts, and the Highline Historical Society. A runner, Joe finished the 1993 Portland Marathon.
