Statement of Interest

I am a native Washingtonian with strong convictions about our state's future. I have spent the bulk of my professional life in Central Puget Sound working on complex transportation and land use issues. And I am increasingly concerned about our ability to create and sustain livable communities.

To me, livability is about creating clean and reliable transportation solutions like light rail. It's also about promoting green approaches to building communities and developing new energy technologies. Doing so will achieve both economic and environmental benefits. The legislature must take this on given its regulatory and fiscal responsibilities. This is especially germaine given Governor Gregoire's positioning on climate change and forthcoming recommendations to the legislature.

We must also create opportunities for a broad spectrum of housing options in all of our communities. This means housing for the homeless, low-income housing programs that reach those who are struggling to stay in their homes or buy their first home. Moreover, new approaches must be undertaken to address the rapidly growing group of folks who simply cannot afford to live in communities like Seattle. In order to create comprehensive change in housing, it will require building a strong coalition of citizens, business, labor, developers, builders, the financial industry and political leaders. While this is no easy task, my experience in building coalitions makes me especially qualified to meet this challenge. Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association here in the 34th is an exemplary affordable housing organization with results that should be replicated through strategic state leadership.

Another critical component of livability is health care. This is a paramount state and federal issue with real opportunities and real consequences. Government has an enormous and critical role to play to ensure that every person has access to health care that is fair, affordable and is prevention focused. I support a single-payer approach.

Strong leadership is required for each of these critical areas of public policy and I look forward to making meaningful and tangible contributions, especially in the areas of transportation and housing--two of the 34th's top issues. I am highly energetic, inclusive, strategic, hard-working and results-oriented. It would be a privilege to serve the 34th district as our State Representative.

Thank you for your time and I hope to gain your trust, friendship and support!
